I remember my first trip back to home, after having finished my first year of studying earth science. I saw my home city in a very different light. I could point at the rocks on the pavement or the buildings around me and say “hey! That used to be the belly of a volcano!” or point at a beautiful scenery and say “Hey, two whole continents had to collide to make this happen”. It opened up a whole new perspective. I saw Earth with a sense of awe and respect.

The Neev Project is about connecting people to the planet’s deep-time story and building a future that respects its past.

In the middle of Mumbai’s urban skyline stands Gilbert Hill; a rare rock tower(monolith) of columnar basalt. Its another reminder of Mumbai’s volcanic past. While the columnar basalt formation (the iconic hexagonal columns) are relatively common in volcanic regions, a towering columnar rock structure like Gilbert Hill is incredibly rare.

Formed around 60 million years ago, this massive rock face is one of only three such massive structures in the world. A monument built by time and slow cooling lava. It’s right here in Andheri! 😍

We turned Sanjay Gandhi National Park into a giant outdoor mystery where the kids became geologists for a day, on a quest to uncover clues, decode rock formations, and piece together the ancient story of the land beneath their feet.

From spotting volcanic bombs to tracing lava flows, they walked, wondered, and wove together the geological history of SGNP, one clue at a time.

Did you know Mumbai’s favourite caves have an explosive past?

The rocks at Kanheri are the result of violent underwater volcanic eruptions that occurred around 61 million years ago. Ash, lava, and rock fragments surged across the landscape like a massive mudslide, eventually solidifying into volcaniclastic rock.
Fast forward to 2,000 years ago, Buddhist monks transformed these ancient volcanic rocks into their canvas, carving out 109 remarkable caves. By the 3rd century, Kanheri had become a thriving centre of Buddhist life and culture. It’s a powerful reminder of how geology and human history are deeply intertwined, each shaping the other to tell incredible stories.
Armed with notebooks and field tools, we traced the volcanic past etched into these rocks.

90,000 years ago, a drive up Khardung-La, Ladakh, one of the world’s highest motorable passes - would reveal the Leh glacier stretching nearly 6 km beyond its current edge. The entire village of Gangles lay buried beneath its icy expanse. Today, the Leh glacier is still visible at the top of Khardung-La.
While much of the glacier’s retreat is due to Earth’s natural climate cycles, the past 30 years have seen a dramatic retreating of glaciers in this region because of global warming.

Paleolake at Lamayuru, Ladakh
Long before the famed Lamayuru Monastery and the Moonland existed, a drive down Fotu La on NH1 towards Lamayuru on a summer morning, 30,000 years ago, would have led you to the beautiful sight of a high altitude azure lake, like the one you see at pangong.

A mini earthquake caused a landslide on the mouth of a glacial stream and blocked its path, some 36,000 years ago,to form the beautiful Lamayuru Lake (panel 2). A sight one could have enjoyed for 10,000 years, until the mouth of the stream opened up again and emptied its contents down the Indus River, as far as Skurbuchan.

The local legend goes that a great sage walked to this lake and planted a stick and barley seed on top of a hill. The next day the seed at sprouted and stick had grown leaves, thus announcing that a monastery be built here. The lake miraculously drained, making way for one of Ladakh’s oldest and revered monastery to be built at Lamayuru.

What remains of that lake today, makes millions stop in their tracks along NH1 to take photos: the famous moonland landscape of Lamayuru. It’s actually the light coloured fine sediments that were once deposited below the beautiful azure lake of Lamayuru

Sangam of river Zanskar and Indus, Ladakh

The coming together of two powerful, influential rivers that have carved the landscape of Ladakh to what you see today. The variation in colour, apart from being visually stunning, tells a story of the how long the rivers have travelled and the treasures they carry. The Zanskar river is bluer since it travel a shorter distance from its glacier and is carrying less sediments from the mountains it has cut cross to get to sangam. Culturally, the river Zanskar carved a path to Zanskar valley which allowed for travel of early settlers, evidenced by ancient petroglyphs along the way to chilling.
